Lesson 1: Understand crypto before taking risks

Learning goal: Recognise what cryptoassets are, how prices move and common warning signs of scams.

1. What is a cryptoasset?

A cryptoasset is a digital asset whose ownership or transactions may be recorded on a blockchain. Different assets serve different purposes. A coin's popularity does not prove it has value or that its price will rise.

2. Why prices change

Prices respond to buyers and sellers, liquidity, news, regulation, token supply and expectations. A price chart shows past trades, not future certainty. A fast rise can reverse quickly, especially in thin markets.

3. Spot hype and FOMO

Be cautious of guaranteed returns, secret investment groups, pressure to buy immediately and claims that a token “cannot go down.” Verify information from multiple independent sources and understand who controls token supply.

4. Protect your assets

Never share a wallet seed phrase or private key. Use strong unique passwords and multi-factor authentication where available. Double-check wallet addresses and websites: blockchain transfers can be irreversible.

Try it yourself

Choose a crypto project without buying it. Write down its purpose, major risks, circulating versus total supply, and three questions you still cannot answer. If the risks are unclear, that is a reason to pause.

Af-Soomaali: Ha ku degdegin iibsi adigoo ka baqaya inaad fursad seegto (FOMO). Hubi xogta, faham khatarta, hana la wadaagin cidna furaha sirta ah ee boorsadaada.
